Are babies gurus?
A little pep talk and some of my favorite things.
“Do you want this one or this one?” I asked, holding up a block of cheese and a Tupperware container of steamed broccoli in front of my daughter’s face.
She is 13 months old now, and I’m trying to give her some agency in her decision-making.
She looked left at the cheese, then back at the broccoli, and it was quiet for a second before she smiled big, and pointed right between the two, saying, “That!”
I looked to my right and saw a jar of pickles.
I laughed.
“Okay. You know what you want. Respect.”
When I put the broccoli down to grab the pickles, she started cackling and clapping.
I think we all started out like her, using our voice, speaking up, not giving a shit what people thought of our tone or desires, ignoring binary decisions, honoring our truth, prioritizing expression, asking for what we need, etc.
The list goes on and on.
It seemed like such a simple decision to ask for pickles, but I think there’s a lot we can learn from it.
Are babies gurus?
As usual, here are a few things I love. If you have any suggestions or items I need to see, please reply and send them my way.
THIS PODCAST: I love this one. If you have any interest in AI, it’s a must-listen. Here’s the summary: “The AI revolution has begun – the product of a 70-year quest by scientists, mathematicians, and visionaries who set out to build machines that could think. But what began as a fringe idea has now become one of the most powerful forces of the 21st century. This is the story of that journey: its rivalries, its competing visions of utopia and apocalypse, and the race to build what may be humanity’s last invention.” Listen anywhere podcasts are found.
THIS EXAMPLE: If you’re not fully paying attention to how quickly the world is shifting, here is a great video demonstration that got me thinking. How does a society function when nobody can believe anything they see online anymore? Where does trust live then? How do we communicate ideas and facts? Check out this short video with Neil deGrasse Tyson here.
THIS SONG: I really like this one a lot. A lot is going on here, including some great lines.
THIS ANIMATION: I shared this a long time ago, but it crossed my path again, and I think it’s worth a look. What a great visual.
THESE MEMES: I just posted a dozen favorite images I’ve found this month, and there are some outrageously profound quotes mixed in with some absurd imagery, as it should be. These ones made me laugh, think, or sigh.
